You could not step twice in the same rivers;
\nfor others and yet other waters…

With sand to shake form damp towels;
\nto work out of our shoes on the porch
\nstep, turning them upside down;<\/span><\/p>\n

to wash out hair and scalp, the softest
\nfolds of skin; and later to fall
\nfrom the novel, its cover slightly<\/span><\/p>\n

curled from too much sun, and there
\non the desk, not to read, but to find
\nnot gook reason to continue, seeing each<\/span><\/p>\n

grain, each rounded edge and prismatic
\ncenter, a kaleidoscope of grit to be swept
\nclean and carried off… but then I can’t<\/span><\/p>\n

stop recalling: pulling her close, wet
\nand naked, chilled by the tidal wind,
\nnipples puckered, the curve of her spine<\/span><\/p>\n

drifted with sand, and the waves breaking,
\nbreaking…Is this what
\nHeraclitus meant, that we could not<\/span><\/p>\n

step into the same body twice, whether
\nit is a river, ourselves, or another,
\nthat we are not just the same slipping<\/span><\/p>\n

away, but he sand we walk over
\nand carry with us, caught in our cuffs
\nand shoes, is forever changed,<\/span><\/p>\n

and changes us, though love may cling
\nlike each grain late in the day
\non dunes still leaning against a winded sea.<\/span><\/p>\n
